Ahmedabad, July 3, 2025 – Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal announced today that his party will contest the upcoming Bihar assembly elections independently, without any alliance with Congress or the INDIA bloc.
He emphasized that the alliance with the INDIA bloc was restricted to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and no longer applies to state-level polls. Kejriwal questioned Congress’s intentions, citing their decision to contest the recent Visavadar by-election in Gujarat—a move he claimed was orchestrated by the BJP to undermine AAP. “If there was truly an alliance, Congress would not have fielded a candidate against us,” he remarked.
For its part, AAP has adopted an aggressive strategy in Bihar. On June 17, national spokesperson Sanjay Singh confirmed the party will field candidates for all 243 seats in the state assembly, firmly rejecting any potential tie-up—even with Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party.
AAP Delhi chief Saurabh Bhardwaj elaborated on the party’s assertive stance, stating the decision stems from a “breach of understanding” by Congress during the Gujarat by-elections. Despite agreements to stay clear of each other’s seats, Congress still contested, which AAP sees as a betrayal of alliance principles.
The announcement has triggered reactions from political rivals. Congress dismissed it as a mere publicity stunt, arguing that AAP lacks significant organisational strength in Bihar. Janata Dal (United) suggested the move reflects cracks within the INDIA bloc .
Meanwhile, Bihar’s ruling NDA alliance—including BJP, JD(U), and LJP—appears confident. LJP chief Chirag Paswan confirmed his party’s support for NDA candidates across all 243 seats, asserting the coalition’s appeal to the electorate
